  • La Otra Orilla U.S. Debut at Jacob’s Pillow

    Deconstructed Conceptual Flamenco

    While rooted in Spain, as a tradition of music and dance flamenco is performed by companies all around the globe. This is the first American appearance by the experimental Montreal based group La Otra Orill. At Jacobs's Pillow Dance Festival it features the co-artistic directors, solo dancer Myriam Allard and singer, Hedi Garja. They are accompanied by three musicians.

    In 1971 Steve Reich composed "Drumming" a masterpiece of the Minimal style of music. In 1999, now regarded as an icon of contemporary dance, it was choreographed as La Vie qui bat (The Beat of Life) by Ginette Laurin. It was retired and is now revived by O Vertigo Danse and Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) seen with live music at Jacob's Pillow Dance.

    The highlight of the 2011 Jacob's Pillow season was the American debut of 3e Étage: Soloists and Dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet. For their sold out return artistic director and choreographer Samuel Murez created a new work Le Pillow Thirteen which had its world premiere this week in Becket. Yet again the audience was thrilled and utterly enchanted.

    Something Old and Something New

    On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the British composer Edward Benjamin Britten (November 22, 1913 – December 4, 1976) last night Morris presented the world premiere of Curlew River. The chamber opera was inspired by a then young composer visiting Japan. It is adapted from Juro Motomasa’s medieval play Sumidagawa. For the second half of the program The Mark Morris Dance Group presented one of his most iconic works Dido and Aeneas (1989).

    The performance of Piaf Plus which we attended in Indianapolis by the 41-year-old Dance Kaleidoscope was a compelling conflation of narrative inflected American Modernism with a decidedly French accent. The choreography was created by the company's 22-year-long artistic director and former member of the Martha Graham company, David Hochoy. While elegant and conservative the dance had spectacular elements evked by lead dancers Jilian Godwin and Zach Young.

    The 2013 Jacob's Pillow season kicks off with a gala on June 15 and winds down on August 25. Three are numerous highlights including Dance Theatre of Harlem, Compagnie Käfig a word-of-mouth hit of Festival 2012, with six sold-out performances, the return of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, from Brazil Companhia Urbana de Dança, and a return of the stunning, French 3e étage which was astonishing with its 2011 appearance.     Last night Compagnie Kafig blew the roof off of the Ted Shawn Theatre in their second visit to Jacob’s Pillow Dance since 2001. The French choreographer based in Lyon, Mourad Merzouki, has worked with eleven Brazilian dancers to create a compelling blend of indigenous dance and high cultures. The audience was thrilled and astonished.

For most audience members it was a highlight of Pillow's 80th season.

    Five years ago, Bill T. Jones (born 1952), one of the most successful and celebrated dancers and choreographers of his generation, with more than 100 works created for the Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company (founded in 1982), retired from performing. He continues to choreograph for the company. This week he was back on stage for a 2012 work Story/ Time.

    First Visit to the Berkshires

    Now in its 33rd year the Hong Kong Ballet has toured twenty times while this is its first visit to Jacob’s Pillow Dance. The company adheres to mostly Western traditions of classical ballet with primarily Chinese and Asian dancers and a minority of European and North American members. For the past few years the artistic director has been Madeline Onne. She is a former Principal Dancer of the Royal Swedish Ballet. She founded the company 59 Degrees North which performed at Pillow several times. From 2002-2008 she was the Artistic Director of the Royal Swedish Ballet before joining the Hong Kong Ballet in 2009.

    For 71 minutes I got religion while completely absorbed by the Shaker inspired Borrowed Light a collaboration between Tero Saarinen Company and The Boston Camerata. The 2004 work had its 2006 U.S. premiere at Jacob's Pillow and has returned via "popular demand" for Pillow's 80th season. It was a stunning highlight of an anniversary celebration.
