The Berkshire International Film Festival will showcase 75 of the latest in independent feature, documentary, short and family films from some 18 countries. The festival, which takes place from May 29 – June 1, 2014 in Great Barrington and May 31 – June 1st in Pittsfield, MA, will bring films, filmmakers, industry professionals and film fans together for a four-day festival celebrating independent film featuring 29 documentaries, 28 narrative features and 16 short films. Some of the countries represented this year are Jordan, Afghanistan, Philippines, India, Chile, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Iceland, Morocco, Iceland, Israel and France, and a record 41 filmmakers will be in attendance with their films.

The 8th Annual season of The Berkshire International Film Festival (BIFF) today announces the line-up to the action packed program showcasing over 75 of the latest in independent feature, documentary, short and family films from some 20 countries. Heirloom Meals’ Christmas Special is the follow-up program to the widely-seen and highly-praised Heirloom Meals’ Thanksgiving Special. The Berkshire International Film Festival announced the winners of the annual BIFF Juried Prize Award and the BIFF Audience Award. In the Juried documentary category, the winner was CRIME AFTER CRIME directed by Yoav Potash, the powerful documentary film on the legal battle to free Debbie Peagler, a woman imprisoned for over a quarter century due to her connection to the murder of the man who abused her.

Filmmakers Jules Bruff (TIXE Films), Alethea Root and Don Presley (Truth 13 Productions), in partnership with Eleonore Daily, and Cheryl Stewart (howUNoriginal Productions) will make their U.S debut at the prestigious Berkshire International Film Festival (BIFF) on June 3rd and June 5th with PART TIME FABULOUS. Great Barrington native and independent filmmaker, Alethea Root, returns home for her directorial debut of PART TIME FABULOUS and Berkshire’s own award-winning, folk singer Meg Hutchinson lent her poignant song Being Happy for the trailer. No U.S. distributor is attached at this time.

The annual Berkshire International Film Festival will run from June 2 through 5. The film festival will feature some 70 US and international independent feature films, documentaries, and shorts.

Howl by Allen Ginsberg is the most enduring poem of the Beat Generation. There will be a special screening of a new film about the controversial poem on October 15 at the Triplex Cinema in Great Barrington. It is being presented by the Berkshire International Film Festival.

The New Stage Company above Beacon Cinema in Pittsfield is presenting A Thousand Clowns by Herb Gardner from July 15 to August 1. A Thousand Clowns is the hilarious and touching Tony Award winning play that was later adapted into an Academy Award winning film starring Jason Robards. It is the story of an unemployed television writer trying to adapt his cantankerous worldview in order to find work and retain custody of his 12-year-old nephew.

A documentary on comic Joan Rivers launches the Berkshire International Film Festival on June 6 preceded by a short documentary on Marge Champion celebratng her 90th birthday. This year the festival is expanding from Great Barrington to Pittsfield with a schedule of more than 75 features, documentaries and shorts. Actress Patricia Clarkson will be honored.

It takes a community to make something like the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center succeed, and in Great Barrington this local theatre is a success in every sense of the word. Executive Director Beryl Jolly tells us why.

When General Electric moved out in the late 1980s, with 10,000 lost jobs, Pittsfield fell on hard times. The recovery started in 2003 when the new Mayor, James M. Ruberto, mandated that arts and culture would be a focus for economic development. Megan Whilden disussed how she joined the team in 2005 and the remarkable progress since then that has reshaped the city as a cultural destination.

New plays by David Mamet, Eric Bogosian, Larry Gelbart and Joan Ackermann will be read by Karen Allen and others at the BTL Gala at the Mahaiwe on May 29. Proceeds will help fund the free series of readings.
