During a studio visit in New Mexico Jaune Quick To See Smith agreed to create new works for a special exhibition at the Gallery of New England School of Arts and Design. She presented a lecture to a large audience of students and faculty and also spoke intimately in the gallery. One of the most anticipated Tanglewood concerts this summer was the only scheduled appearance of the newly appointed BSO director Andris Nelsons. Accordingly his conducting Verdi Requiem on July 27 has been cancelled. He was scheduled to meet with the media on Friday. The concert will be presented with a yet to be announced guest conductor.

The world premiere of Myra Slotnick’s new play, The Weight of Water, opened at the Provincetown Theatre on October 6th, 2011. In November of 2012, the entire original cast appeared in a staged reading of the play at The Abingdon Theatre in NY. The upcoming New York production features the original cast and creative team from The Provincetown Theater production.

Featured artists in this year's Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, June 28 to July 7, includes Aretha Franklin, Wayne Shorter, Chucho Valdés, George Benson, Oliver Jones; the absolutely essential Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, John Abercrombie, Ravi Coltrane, Bill Frisell Holly Cole and Boz Scaggs as well as many more.

The 2013 Jacob's Pillow season kicks off with a gala on June 15 and winds down on August 25. Three are numerous highlights including Dance Theatre of Harlem, Compagnie Käfig a word-of-mouth hit of Festival 2012, with six sold-out performances, the return of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, from Brazil Companhia Urbana de Dança, and a return of the stunning, French 3e étage which was astonishing with its 2011 appearance. The legendary Martha Graham Dance Company will perform. Subscriber ticket sales begin January 28 and go on sale to the public on April 8.

For the brilliant young comic, Jenn Harris, the indy film, Gayby, which was screened at the recent Williamstown Film Festival may be her breakthrough. We spoke with her about the film and her work with the young company QWAN. She and Randy Harrison appeared for a one nighter with Qwan at the Colonial Theatre this past summer.

Sweet Soubrette, a melodic, ukulele-powered indie rock band based in NYC, will perform an acoustic concert at Dream Away Lodge in Becket on August 18. WBRS (Brandeis University radio) says: “Sweet Soubrette’s music is modern and sonically diverse…talented instrumentalists and tightly sung melodies make for a really exciting listen.”

As home to Mass MoCA, MCLA and a growing arts community North Adams is one of the most unique cities in the Commonwealth. There wasn't the same intensity and media coverage of the race this time between incumbent Dick Alcombright who handily defeated opponent Ron Boucher. The 2009 contest against old time pol, John Barrett, III was a bloodbath. To make things interesting Barrett has won a seat on the City Council. Whether he is there to help the city or hurt Alcombright remains to be seen. Stay tuned.

On a mid week work night Steel Dan brought their pulsing strap on jazz rock to a near capacity audience at Tanglwood. The cerebral music and sardonic lyrics were just what the doctor ordered for cash strapped Tanglewood which is loosening up to allow the vulgarians into the tample of the hallowed grounds of the BSO in Lenox. Awesome. A good time was had by all and nothing was trashed.

Blogs and the social networks routinely scoop print media on news, previews and reviews. By the time newspapers cover arts stories they may be days old. Arts organizations continue to rely primarily on print reviews to sell tickets but that has changed dramatically in the past few years. Through blogs and tweets Broadway shows with long previews may be dead in the water by opening night. Through internet coverage audiences make up their minds on ticket sales before reviews appear in print.

WAM Theatre announces Spring 2011 events including a 24 hour theatre project across state lines, an ensemble presentation exploring feminism in the lives of young women today and a festival of solo works written and performed by women to benefit the training of at least one community midwife at Edna’s Hospital in Somaliland.

Starting February 3 with an opening night set for February 10, the playwright and filmmaker Zach Helm -- author of the play Good Canary directed by John Malkovich, and the films "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" which he also directed, and "Stranger than Fiction" -- will perform his new piece Interviewing theAudience at The Vineyard.

Playwrights Michael Lew (MICROCRISIS, STOCKTON) and Rehana Mirza (BARRIERS, THE GOOD MUSLIM) take the helm as co-directors of New York's Ma-Yi Theater Company’s Writers Lab. Additionally, the six year-old Ma-Yi Writers Lab welcomes five new playwrights into the Lab: affectionately known as “labbies” they are Samantha Chanse, Mia Chung, Edgar Mendoza, Don Nguyen and Susan Soon He Stanton.

The trope of the hilarious improvisation of Blind Date, conceived and starring the Canadian, Rebecca Northan, as Mimi, the Parisian coquette with a clown's nose, is that her co star is randomly chosen from the audience. With remarkable wit and skill the gag is sustained as a ninety minute, one act play. It proves to be a side splitting adventure.

The American Repertory Theatre opens the musical The Blue Flower by Jim and Ruth Bauer at the Loeb Drama Center in Harvard Square, Cambriidge. Under the direction of Will Pomerantz it brings to life the German artists of the end of World War I that emerged from devastation and chaos to form the movements of Expressionism and Dada that morphed into Surrealism. The production opens on December 1 with previews and runs through January 8.

Broadway star and four time Tony winner, Audra McDonald is on the run. It took some 26 hours of travel time, including multiple delays in Mexico City, to reach a scheduled Tanglewood concert. From the stage of sold out Ozawa Hall she announced that she was about to perform for the Obama family. Despite all that jet lag she settled into a stunning and intimate evening of show tunes. The evening was a highlight of what is proving to be a sensational season in the Berkshires.

Barrington Stage Company, in Pittsfield, Ma. will present A WAM welcome a benefit for Women for Women International on April 9-11. This evening of three diverse theatrical selections celebrates live theatre pieces created by women.
