  • Jason Samuels Smith at SPAC

    Offers Master's Tap Class on May 27

    Saratoga Performing Arts Center has announced that Jason Samuels Smith, one of the best tap artists in the world, will teach a Master Class at The National Museum of Dance on May 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tap dancers of intermediate ability who are at least ten years old are eligible to participate in the class which will be team-taught by Samuels Smith and his troupe of professional dancers.

    Accepts Fourth Annual Award June 19

    During the opening gala of Jacob's Pillow on June 19 the dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones will receive the festival's Fourth Annual award. Jones won a Tony Award for Spring Awakening and is the director of Fela a musical which is now on Broadway. The Jacob's Pillow award comes with a prize of $25,000.

    In its annual collaboration with Jacobs Pillow the 25-year-old Stephen Petronio dance company presented a new work I Drink the Air Before Me at Mass MoCA. The dance set to music by Nico Muhly evoked a storm at sea. It was an evening of turbulence in every sense.

    Dzul Dance founder and artistic director, Javier Dzul was awarded a prestigious commission in the fall of 2009 by the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA) of Mexico and the provincial government of state of Campeche for bringing international awareness to Mayan culture. For this honor, conferred once each decade, Dzul was awarded full funding to create a dance company, La Compania de Danza Contemporanea del Estado de Campeche.

    Highlights of the 2010 Festival include the U.S. debut of The Göteborg Ballet of Sweden; three world premieres co-commissioned by Jacob's Pillow from diverse young choreographers Kyle Abraham, Monica Bill Barnes, and Camille A. Brown; U.S. premieres from Spain, India, Thailand, and Israel; and celebrated favorites including contemporary ballet company Trey McIntyre Project, the men-on-pointe offerings of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, and the ever-popular Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.

    The best things in life are free. Sortah. On Saturday, February 13 from 11 AM to 8 PM there is no charge to hang out at Mass MoCA. There will be tours of the galleries as well as fun and games. With complimentary cake and ice cream. Whoopie. Afro Cuban Hip Hop drummer and band leader Pedrito Martinez, will keep the dance floor packed starting at 8 PM. It will cost you $15 in advance and $19 the day of the show. Not free but cheap to shake your bootie on a frosty night.

    Monica Bill Barnes will be in residence October 18-25, Kyle Abraham arrives November 15-21, and Camille A. Brown in the spring of 2010, April 18-25. Each Creative Development Residency includes housing and unlimited studio use for the artists and their dancers, and concludes with an invitation-only, work-in-progress showing during which artists receive valuable creative feedback from audience members.

    Tina Ramirez founded Ballet Hispanico in 1970. She recently stepped down and the new Artistic Director is Eduardo Vilaro. Starting in 1984 this is the fourth appearance of the New York based company at Jacob's Pillow. They will close the Pillow season on Sunday, August 30. This appearance includes the world premiere of "Locked Up Laura" and four other works.

    Anne Plamondon is featured this week through Sunday, August 23, in the Doris Duke Theater at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Becket. Last week, the classically-trained dancer dazzled the audience with her scene-stealing performance in Rubberbandance's "Punto Ciego," an instant classic. This weekend, she's one of the lead dancers in Kidd Pivot's dazzling production of "Lost Action."

    In what has become an annual visit to Tanglewood the Mark Morris Dance Group presented two world premiers "Visitation" and "Empire Garden." They were accompanies by Yo Yo Ma, cello, and Emanuel Ax on "Visitation." The violinist Colin Jacobsen joined them to play Ives for "Empire Garden."

    Honoring the Choreographer Who Died at 90

    Choreographer Marce Cunningham has been honored with the 2009 Jacob's Pillow Dance Awards. The company first performed at the Pillow in 1955 and several times since then. Because of plans recently announced by the 90 year old dancer this week of performances may well be his last for Jacob's Pillow. Cunningham died just after this review was filed.

    The company Groupe Emile Dubois from Grenoble,France was founded by Jean-Claude Gallota and Mathilde Altaraz in 1979. They appeared at Jacob's Pillow with a new work "Des Gens qui dansent" during a rare American tour. It makes us rethink our notions of contemporary dance.

    A capacity audience attended "Mujeres" with Belen Maya and Rocio Molina, which launched the 77th season of the summer long Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. There is a great tradition of Flamenco at the pillow starting with the first season in 1942 which featured the legendary La Argentina.

    Mass MoCA in North Adams is sponsoring a week long residence and collaboration between two American choreographers- Kyle Abraham and Amy O'Neal- with two Japanese choreographers- Kitamari and Yukio Suzuki. Their collaboration will culminate in the performance of a work in progress on Saturday, April 25. This unique program is sponsored by the US/Japan Choreographers Exchange.
