Pulse

There is a pulse to the earth
Time and seasons
Here in New England
We get them all
Like the three bears
Our porridge is
Hot, cold, and medium
Too rarely just right
Most festive now
Mid December
Christmas and New Year
Keeping up spirits
Family and friends
Groaning board feasts
Merry mad gatherings
Laughter and cheer
Then dead of winter
Pervasive gloom
Short days and long nights
Those that can flee
Then scurry back
When it’s bright again
Too hot in their summers
The warmer climes
Hurricanes and tornadoes
Global warnings
Never quite right
Like baby bear’s porridge
Hardy folks we
Stick it out
Living on root cellars
Till last of taters
Then primavera
When Persephone
Returns to Tanglewood
We are hearty souls
For now egg nog
Laced with Meyer’s rum
Munching on fruit cake
Soup and stews
Getting work done
When its cold outside
Books written and read
Which is why
New Englanders are
Smarter than most
More liberal too
Comes from hibernation
Grim and bear it
