Lonesome Pine

Lonesome Pine
With infinite wisdom
Suits bought up land
An overgrown tangle
Shrubs and stumps
Choked with weeds
Habitat for wildlife
Yanked birch and aspen
Clearcut the rest
Nice and neat
Nature tamed
Planted a cash crop
Row upon row
Seedling pines
Came summer heat
Season of drought
Winter winds
Spring mudslides
Sad little trees
Never thrived
Withered and died
Suits wondered why
Where were the birches
Twisted with roots
Bringing water and
All the nutrients
How they survive
Seedlings stay alive
We need that synergy
All mixed up
Dig the jive
Takes all kinds
Like you and me
Folks in the hood
One holy mess
Screw the rest
We the people
Go it alone man
You be one
Lonesome pine
Sure ain’t no
Friend of mine
