Capitol Improvements

Great Unveiling

Capitol Improvements

Off to Montpellier
Nothing could be easier
A straight shot
Up in Vermont
Cruisin’ from Stowe
Cabin in the snow
Driving down below
Week in the woods
Odd to find traffic
Rural mean streets
Tons of  teens
Cavorting all about
On a school day
Raucous romping play
Hard to park
Gloomy and dark
Ubiquitous TV crews
Lots of cameras
Locals shooting selfies
Day of celebration
Great unveiling
Standing before Capitol
Green Mountain State House
Smallest in America
Quite something ain’t it
A smiling Vet said
His cap read Nam
Took down scaffold
Bout an hour ago
Lucky you came today
Fair goddess Ceres
In classical white
She of harvest and grain
Topping the dome
Now home alone
Through ice and cold
Freshly gilded
Shimmering gold
Old one up there
Lasted eighty years
Our guide said
Like ones before
First Larkin Mead's 1858
Then Dwight Dwinell's
Both rotted out pine
Now sturdy mahogany
By Chris Miller
Much harder wood
Should be good
Layer on layer
Carved upstate in Calais
Seen it myself other day
Took his time
Sculpted so fine
May last forever
Grand to behold
So stark and bold
Quite lonely at the top
Craning my neck
Imagining just yesterday
Like Bald Eagle
Perched on a hill
What a thrill
Sloggin’ through slop
Slushy wet snow
New boots she said
Flirty old dame passing by
Still turning heads
Looking at my feet
Taking giant strides
Where most folks
Fear to tread
Stepping on snakes
Those Green Mountain Boys
Sturdy country lads
Farmers mostly
Fought many wars
Some far from home
Away on their own
State of milk and honey
More cows than people
America was great back then
Like domed goddess
Reaping what they sow
So much to owe
