Turkeys

American Classic with a Gallic Flavor

By: - Nov 24, 2015

Turkeys

That first Thanksgiving
Harvest celebration
Neighbors later obliterated
Brought wild turkeys
Like the flock
In our back yard
Devastated by bird flu
Loss of millions
But not ours
Plentiful at Big Y
Even a coupon
Seven dollar rebate
For a big one
Just the two of us
Home alone
Perhaps joining friends
Years ago in New York
Far from family
Invited to Queens
Uncle Bill
His French wife Esterre
A fine cook
Brought out the bird
With a white wine glaze
Truly amazing
A Gallic twist
For an American classic
Truth is just roasted
It can be bland
Best part always
Lots of stuffing
Slathered with gravy
Remembering this year
Those slaughtered
In Paris or
The mean streets
Back home
Yet again
We sit in peace
Tattered brotherhood
Having our fill
Under a tarnished
White flag
