Sweeney Todd
Last summer the season atBarrington Stage Company started with Carousel. The summer at Barrington  has opened with West Side Story  and Putnam County Spelling Bee. For reasons of budget musicals, which are expensive to mount, tend to be rare in the Berkshires. So audiences greatly appreciate and flocked to these Barrington  productions. Recently, we were treated to a terrific run of The Fantasticks. It was exactly that, fantastick.

While 2008 proved to be challenging for the arts in the Berkshires, through the strong programming of Boyd, Barrington thrived. Barrington also did well with  production of Streetcar Named Desire and Sleuth.  It had a surprise hit with  the Stage Two premiere of Freud.

The complete Barrington season will be announced later. The Barrington press release follows.

Broadway veteran Jeff McCarthy (Urinetown, Side Show, Beauty and the Beast) returns to Barrington Stage next summer to star in the title role of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's musical thriller Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street scheduled for a five-week run from June 17-July 17, 2010 on the BSC Mainstage.

Presented in celebration of Sondheim's 80th Birthday, Julianne Boyd will direct Sweeney Todd and Darren R. Cohen will serve as musical director. Complete casting and design team will be announced at a future date. Sweeney marks the fourth Sondheim musical to be mounted by Boyd, who previously directed A Little Night Music (1997), Company (2000) and Follies (2005).

Single tickets go on sale March 1, 2010. Flex Passes are available at discounted 2009 prices now through December 31.

McCarthy's Barrington credits include Ben Stone in Follies and Mack Sennett in Mack & Mabel.
