Eclipse Mill Gallery Annual: Part Two

The Eclipse Mill at 243 Union Street, in North Adams, Mass. is a mixed use complex of some 40 artist residence and studio, loft spaces. It is a short walk from Mass MoCA, the renowned contemporary arts and performance museum. In recent years North Adams has become known for its ever expanding creative community.

The Eclipse Mill Gallery is maintained by the owners and residents of the loft complex. In a season that runs from May through early December there is a cycle of exhibitions. These are curated by Mill residents and often include artists from the Berkshire region.

Coordinating with the city wide Open Studios in October there is an annual exhibition focused on a selection of work by Eclipse residents.

This lively survey of work in a range of media has been extended until Saturday, December 3.

Because of previous commitments some of the artists have removed work from the initial run of the exhibition which was scheduled to end on November 6. The installation has been refreshed with additional works. Those who have previously visited the exhibition may wish to return for another viewing of Eclipse Gallery Annual: Part Two.

In particular, Erin Ko, who has returned from an extended residence in China, has created a number of new works which will be seen here for the first time. This summer she had a one woman show at Gallery 51 in downtown North Adams.

A large expressionist painting by Dawn Nelson, Young Mill Spirit, is a reprieve of a major summer project in the Eclipse Mill Gallery curated by Ralph Brill. The exhibition Children of the Mill focused on a visit from documentary photographer Lewis Hine in the early years of the 20^th century. He recorded images of child labor which inspired the special exhibition which was included in regional school programming. The insightful project is a vivid example of community outreach initiated by Mill residents.

Another example is the annual project with area school children to present their art in the gallery. This launches the season of exhibitions and has been organized by Phil Sellers. Last year, with the artist Stephen Hannock, the student project was also shown at Mass MoCA including an awards celebration for the talented young artists.

Looking ahead to the 2012 season the Eclipse Mill Gallery starts its regular run of exhibitions with The Berkshire Salon. With a nominal fee to cover expenses all artists from the region are invited to show their work.

The program of exhibitions includes a mix of thematic surveys as well as a focus on one man and small group shows.

In recent years the Eclipse Mill Gallery has become an important aspect of the diverse and dynamic North Adams arts initiative. It provides opportunities for a wide spectrum of artists and craft persons to exhibit their work to Berkshire residents and visitors.
