Mom Cracked the Whip
Not Loosing a Step

Mom Cracked the Whip
When visiting Mom
Well into her 80’s
House in Annisquam
From car
To front door
Her waiting there
Greeting of
At least five insults
Privilege and duty
Unruly son
When will you be
A little old lady
I asked plaintively
Not her style
After giving up Florida
Lonely winters
In the house
Pip came every day
After school
Just up the hill
Maid in the morning
Fixed breakfast
Pip made dinner
Got her ready for bed
Nights on the porch
Favorite TV
Never missed Masterpiece
Loved 60 Minutes
Books on tape
Keeping up
Sharp and alert
When will I see you
Imploring as we departed
That final time
With Astrid
Lobster and a martini
Before inevitable night
Slipping into the
Other place
With soft goodbye
To each of us
Still lingers
