Now retired as a professor at Mass College of  Art, where he ran the printmaking studio, Alvin Ouellet is able to devote full time to his practice.

During good weather, in short supply this past summer, he is encountered creating “Berkshire Images: en plein air” the subject of his exhibition in Williamstown.

With enticing serendipity the selection of paintings include sites in Williamstown including the venue for the show. North Adams residents will recognize the landmark marquee of the Mohawk Theatre.

He brings a lush, impasto rich approach to familiar sites with saturated color in the impressionist tradition with a Fauve twist.

Weather or not the artist generally depicts bright sunny days except, of course, when not. In this exhibition, he inserts nocturnal views.

The landscapes are interpretations rather than representations of familiar sites. It is always arresting to encounter one of his expressive interpretations.

Press Release

Alvin Ouellet, an Adams-based artist, will present an Artist Talk on Sunday, October 15th from 4:45 pm to 5:15 pm at Images Cinema, 50 Spring Street, Williamstown, MA.

Ouellet will talk about his approaches to painting en plein air. It  is part of the solo artist show --“Berkshire Images: en plein air” -- currently on exhibit at Images Cinema through October 31st. The show features examples of recent en plein air paintings  created on locations throughout North County/Berkshires and is presented as an ArtWeek Berkshires 2023 event. In addition, Alvin will host an open studio on October 14th, 12noon-6pm at 90 Park Street, Adams MA.

His body of work includes paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, and digital images. The Artist Talk at Images Cinema will discuss his approaches to en plein air painting through the lens of curvilinear perspective.

The artist will discuss his fascination with the juxtapositions of the natural and built environments and his intent to induce a sense of gestural movement to engage and envelop the viewer through closely observed color and value inferences. Ouellet’s studio practice combines observations with memory and imagination to create multi- perspective curvilinear compositions. He will discuss choices of subject matter in his works created in the tradition of expressionist realism.
