Puppy


during the down pour
in the market parking lot
changing to foul weather
pants and jacket
soaking the boxes
of Melba toast
sticking them together
later ripping them apart
tearing the cardboard
to white from blue

after the down pour
barefoot in the warm
taking the four dogs
free of restraint
to the full moon tide
road awash and deep
to the belly of the puppy
who had never seen
was intrigued
though it didn't taste right
who raced in circles
at the foot of
Sunset Point Road
came back to me
