There will be a reading and book launch by Charles Giuliano and Astrid Hiemer on Sunday, September 2. This will occur on the top of Mt. Greylock in the historic Bascom Lodge.

It is suggested to arrive in the late afternoon and enjoy magnificent views from the highest elevation in Massachusetts. The Lodge is the most elaborate of many shelters along the Appalachian Trail.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will start with a reception at 5 PM. The readings will commence after the social time. Giuliano will launch and read from his fifth book of gonzo verse Topsy Turvy. Hiemer will read selections of poetry.

Reservations are required for the prix fixe dinner which starts at 7 PM. The Lodge is noted for its cuisine prepared by chef John Dudek. The menu may be viewed at http://www.bascomlodge.net .

Charles Giuliano and Astrid Hiemer are publishers and editors of the online magazine Berkshire Fine Arts. It was launched in 2006 when they moved from Boston to the Berkshires. The site provides national arts coverage through a staff of contributors.

During down time off season they work on art and literary projects.

Astrid Hiemer, formerly administrator of The Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT, creates unique artist books. She was invited to participate in a book-art exhibition in Romania by the curator Dorothea Fleiss. Images of birches, and an essay, were included in a book and exhibition organized by the German artist Elisabeth Ochsenfeld. For a BFA/Facebook project, Passages, some 50 American and international contributors responded to her call for submissions. Many of her photo and word projects can be accessed at the BFA project space.

Since the 1960s, Charles Giuliano has written arts criticism for numerous newspapers and magazines. In 2006, he retired from teaching art history and the humanities for Suffolk University/ New England School of Art & Design. He has written essays for many exhibition catalogues and scholarly books.

In 1970, while jazz and rock critic for the former daily Boston Herald Traveler, he was the first to coin and publish the word “gonzo.” In 2014 he published Shards of Life. That was followed by Total Gonzo Poems, Ultra Cosmic Gonzology and Gloucester Poems: Nugents of Rockport. A fifth book Topsy Turvy will be launched at Bascom Lodge.
