For the eighth year, the performing arts centers at The Egg and the University at Albany have announced that they will present Dance in Albany, a joint dance series featuring eight offerings for the 2023-24 season. Six of the performances will take place at The Egg at the Empire State Plaza with the remaining two at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown University at Albany campus.
Once again, the series offers a diverse mix ranging from the work of iconic choreographers Bill T. Jones and Mark Morris and the return of tap legend Savion Glover, to explorations of African American movement from modern to hip-hop to street and club dance by Dayton Contemporary and Passion Fruit Dance Companies, to the athleticism of Monica Bill Barnes, to the fusion of illusion and motion by No Gravity Theatre, along with two opportunities to experience the artistry of local choreographer Ellen Sinopoli.
Starting June 30, dance enthusiasts have the opportunity to purchase a Dance in Albany package with a ticket to each of the eight performances for $110, a savings of 50% off the individual prices. Subscriptions that include five and three performances will also be available at a savings of 25% and 10%, respectively. Dance in Albany packages can only be purchased through The Egg Box Office in person at the Empire State Plaza location or by telephone at (518) 473-1845. No handling fees apply.
Individual tickets to each of the performances will also go on sale on July 1 through the respective venues as noted below.
Deepening the two-venue partnership, the resident companies from each venue are working together on a program of premiere dance with live music. The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company, The Egg’s resident troupe, will choreograph and perform new work with the Capital Trio, the UAlbany Performing Arts Center’s ensemble-in-residence. This free performance brings the total number of dance performances between the two venues up to nine for the season.

The multinational trio of Tatiana Desardouin, Lauriane Ogay and Mai Lê Hô brings societal issues to light through their street dance, hip-hop, house and clubbing styles. In a program exploring the “groove,” the threesome use it as a road map to social justice through the physical expression of Black culture.

Pianist Duncan Cumming, violinist Hilary Cumming and cellist S?o?len Dikener team up with the revered regional modern dance company in a program of live music and dynamic dance. In 2018, the artists collaborated in honor of the 25th anniversary of UAlbany’s College of Arts and Sciences and created “As Seen from Above” to music selections from William Matthews’ A Book of Hours. The work will be expanded to its full length for this performance.
