Provincetown Art Association and Museum
2009 Season Schedule
By: Charles Giuliano - Apr 17, 2009
Provincetown Art Association and Museum
460 Commercial Street
Provincetown, MA 02657
508.487.1750
This past week we talked with Chris Busa who is preparing for the 24th annual publication of Provincetown Arts Magazine. It is quite an accomplishment. In addition to the art magazine he also published books related to artists, writers and poets in the renowned Provincetown community. The Provincetown Art Association and Museum was founded in 1914. Its focus at the time was to provide a creative ambiance for those who returned to American at the outbreak of World War One.
There has always been an intimate relationship between Busa's publications and the PAAM. The cover story he has written, with a launch party at the Art Association on July 10, honors a retrospective for the collage artist, and Dartmouth College Professor, Varujan Boghosian. His exhibition will open on July 24 and run through August 30. I warmly recall many hilarious evenings with "Bugsy" when he was a toastmaster and host for parties at the Hanover Inn following openings at the Hood Museum of Art. He also has firm roots in Boston as a student at the legendary Vesper George School of Art.
Opening earlier in the season, from June 5 through July 15, is a retrospective of the intimate, small scale, narrative paintings of Tabitha Vevers. She is a second generation Provincetown artist whose late father, Tony Vevers, curated many exhibitions for the PAAM. Busa's magazine will feature an essay on Tabitha's work by the former curator of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Rachel Rosenfield Lafo. The exhibition originated in Lincoln and will travel to Provincetown.
Another highlight of the season, May 29 through July 14, will be an exhibition on the architecture of Richard Meier. There will be a survey of drawings by Hans Hoffman and his students. Many young artists came to Provincetown to study with Hoffman in his famous summer school. Other Provincetown artists featured this season include: Bert Yarborough, Anne Peretz, Ciro Cozzi, the renowned owner of the restaurant Ciro's. There will be juried and members shows.
