Margaret Swan Current
At Boston Sculptors
By: Boston Sculptors - Apr 10, 2026
Boston Sculptors Gallery (486 Harrison Avenue, Boston) presents Margaret Swan: Current, featuring a new series of polychrome aluminum wall sculpture, on view May 7 to June 7, 2026. Swan’s solo exhibition investigates the progressive directional flow of currents in nature—tides, air, sound, and time—to generate organic gestural, curvilinear forms.
Sinuous planes of flat aluminum, intersected and punctuated by bright swirling aluminum tubing, create counter movement, suggesting rivulets of water, creeping vines, or musical notation, and coaxing the curving leaf-like, wave-like forms into a rhythmic stream of luxurious movement.
After painting the constructed aluminum surfaces, Swan roughly sands them, producing patterns following the contours of the curved sheets. The resulting textured surfaces are then stained with contrasting pigment, generating luminous fluctuations of color over the variously exposed and coated aluminum. The expansive painterly quality of serpentine planes within the network of supporting linear elements animates a dynamic and symbiotic relationship of opposites.
Awarded a New England Foundation for the Arts Regional Fellowship in Sculpture, a Massachusetts Artist Fellowship in Sculpture, and other grants throughout her career, Swan is a graduate of Bennington College and Syracuse University. Her sculpture has been featured in museum exhibitions throughout New England, including the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA.
