The Cut Bridge

Back in the day
The only way
Connecting Cape Ann
To that other world
Immense and unknown
Too far away
For most natives
Gloucester folk
Who never went
Over the cut bridge
Near the Fisherman’s statue
Gazing through a Nor’easter
Out to the sea
Mother and monster
Now and then perhaps
Up the line to Magnolia
Beyond that Beverly
Or even Salem
Twisting round to
Marblehead Race Week
Then scamper back home
Safe on the Cape
Cradle to grave
A great escape
