Fire Paintings
By: Kirstin Ilse - Feb 10, 2008
Artist Statement:
To create a work of art begins with a question, a desire, a longing. It begins in a prayer. A call goes out. Listening for the answer is for me, done best while hands are busy. Painting is the way I listen or meditate.
Paintings of fire are my resonance on war, change and life. War is a great transformation. Fire and war in this context is a conduit of souls and a transformation of matter. The pain of giving birth to a nation that is the fruit of the Age of Enlightenment. Shifts of power. Societal evolution. A device of wicked men. Even sport. But a new beginning come. A clearing of the old. By abstracting drawing of fire, a variety of relationships and movement are expressed.
My works in silk seek luminousity. I use dye steamed into silk because of the color, the graphical nature of resist drawing, the changing and demanding science, the long-plotting layering of technique and the supremely spontaneous moment when the painting arrives.
I engage in many mediums of art. I cut paper into platonic solids faced with graphics that interact. I sew and sculpt fabric into shapes that span rooms. I have drawn, painted, carved and printed since my formative years. I engage with a group of artists performing collaborative works from books and sculpture, to an experiment in trading cards, some of
which are included here for your liking.
