Tanglewood Adds Another Show on July 5
Two Concerts with James Taylor and Carole King Sold Out
By: Charles Giuliano - Feb 08, 2010
The 2010 Berkshire season will be launched with an unprecedented boffo bonanza. When tickets for Tangelwood concerts on Friday and Saturday, July 3 & 4, featuring James Taylor and Carole King, went on sale they were gone in a heartbeat.
If you missed out on that, drats, here is another opportunity. But act fast. Make that call now. An unprecedented third Shed show has been added on Monday, July 5 of the three day holiday weekend.
The fun begins on Friday night with the ever popular Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops.
The two sold out shows, so far, are capped at 18,000 each. The third show has a capacity of 16,000. Add at least 10,000 for the Pops and that means that Tanglewood will draw some 60,000 visitors to the Berkshires.
That represents a huge influx of visitors who will stay in hotels, motels, dine and shop. If folks take the full package and book the entire weekend that leaves a couple of nights when they will not be at Tanglewood. Given the status of sold out lodging, and restaurants that means that they will spread out all over the Berkshires.
That represents some urgency for theatre companies like Williamstown Theatre Festival and Berkshire Theatre Festival who are yet to announce their seasons. We already know that Barrington Stage will have the gonzo musical Sweeney Todd. Sure to be a sellout that weekend. Shakespeare & Company will open John Douglas Thompson in Richard III with Tina Packer holding forth in Women of Will. It is likely that Jacob's Pillow will be doing boffo business.
Let's hope that all of the arts and cultural organizations get their ducks lined up to promote the crap out of what may prove to be a record breaking season. Thank you James and Carole. We owe you. Big Time.
In a time of tough sledding for the arts and tourism economy, which drives the Berkshires, this is terrific news. Front loading all that energy is sure to have a carry over impact. It just ratchets up the message to promote the region as a prime summer destination. Where else can one find all that synergy of world class cultural institutions?
Let the games begin.
Below the BSO press release.
James Taylor and Carole King have added a third concert, on July 5, to their 2010 Tanglewood performance schedule, in response to the fact that their originally scheduled concerts on July 3 and 4 are now sold out with no tickets remaining for either performance.

There is a service charge for each ticket purchased online or by phone. Additional ticket information, including the availability of Shed seats, can be obtained at www.jamestaylor.com.
The Tanglewood Box Office at Tanglewood's Main Gate on West Street in Lenox will open to the public on Friday, June 18. The attendance cap for the July 5 concert is 16,000.
Two of America's most beloved singer/songwriters, James Taylor and Carole King, return to Tanglewood as part of their 2010 Troubadour Reunion Tour, featuring a band of legendary musicians in three special evenings, July 3, 4 (sold out), and 5. The tour, which begins on March 27, takes Taylor and King to Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, before the U.S. portion of the tour begins on May 7. Further information about the James Taylor and Carole King 2010 Troubadour Reunion Tour is available at www.jamestaylor.com.
Though James Taylor has always performed to sold out crowds at Tanglewood since his first performance there in the summer of 2003, this year's originally scheduled concerts on July 3 and 4 (attendance capped at 18,000), sold out faster than any previous Taylor concerts. Taylor also performed to sold-out Tanglewood crowds in June 2003, July 2005, August 2007, July 2008, and August 2009. James Taylor and Friends, an unprecedented weekend of events including four concerts, films, masterclasses, and roundtable discussions took place August 26-30, 2009.
