Artist's Statement

I spend a lot of time in libraries looking at old art books.  Right now I'm looking at painters from the late 1600s, who were documenting life around them.  I try to find images that are visually dramatic and culturally relevant, then paint them in black and white, usually on a much larger scale than the originals.  Sometimes I directly appropriate complete pictures, or collage  bits and pieces from several old works to make a new image.  It's a conversation with
art history that (I hope) touches on nature, power, aggression, and beauty.

Shelley Reed is represented by Sears Peyton Gallery in New York City and by Gibsone Jessup in Toronto.
