The Golden Arrow
Winter Coastal Storm

The Golden Arrow
The golden arrow tops the church
on Meeting House Hill
lit by the rising sun
in January
points north west
Rogue waves
driven by the coming
nor'easter which stretches
from the Gulf of Mexico
to Connecticut
hit Plum Cove Ledge
and shoot spray
eight feet high
Then a dry easterly
following the nor'east storm
pushes waves through
the bottom of the east wall
carrying straw
while their spray
smashes o'er top
To the west
ocean covers
most of the road
also carrying straw
Of course
the pillar is awash
The northerly horizon
is bumpy deep blue
lighter over the tracks
many people
have trod down
and one skier
